While the government of the Dominican Republic wishes to provide education for all its citizens through the 6th grade, the public funds available is insufficient for all children to achieve this goal. There just are not enough public schools, especially in the poorest areas of the country. Many children have no means to travel the distance necessary to get the free education guaranteed them. The children able to attend the public schools often find them overcrowded and undersupplied.
The Foundation for Peace (FFP) is committed to Providing Education and Care, working hand-in-hand with people in need to enable their emergence from poverty. As one step in this process, the FFP School Alliance has been formed between four schools built by our summer mission groups. The FFP is building schools in one community at a time, often with the help of a local church (i.e. San Miguel, Tres Brazos, San Pedro and Ensanche Quisqueya). In Pantoja, a larger public school was built so more community children could attend. More schools will be built as funds become available.
Providing the building structure is an important first step, but it is just the beginning. These communities are unable to adequately fund the costs to operate these schools at this time. Though tuition is low, about $10 a month, it is often more than parents can afford. The FFP is committed to equipping these schools and teachers with the necessary tools and materials to provide the children the education they deserve and need to be self-sufficient in the future.
You can help these children, teachers and families. Just $120 a year will send one child to school, buy the books and supplies needed, and provide support for teacher salaries so that they can feed their own children. The Dominikids: Child Sponsorship Program also ensures that teachers have more than a piece chalk with which to teach. Such assistance eases the heavy burden that many families bear and makes it possible for every child in the family to go to school, every month. Please become a Dominikids sponsor and bring hope to a child. Please return to the home page and click on Help Educate a Child for more information.
You can also help supply these schools by purchasing Usborne books. Usborne publishes a wide range of titles in English and in Spanish. Please visit www.UsborneConnection.com and look for the Foundation for Peace for more information.
Plans are under way to begin a feeding program in the schools with the help of Food for the Poor. Many Dominican children are chronically undernourished. Often families can only afford one meal a day. A meal of rice and beans, with a vitamin, could help ensure children are able to concentrate and learn in school. We hope to raise $120,000 to fully fund the schools composing the FFP School Alliance. Since the number of children needing a complete and quality education numbers in the thousands, it is the intention of the FFP to continue to grow the Alliance as funding for additional school construction is received.
