I graduated from Seattle Pacific University in June with a degree in Biology and I just spent five weeks in Guatemala learning Spanish. I arrived in the Dominican Republic on the 5th of September and I am so thankful to be able to have this opportunity to work with Foundation for Peace.
Attending Seattle Pacific University for the last four years has really helped to shape how I want to serve in this world. I decided to take a year off before my applications to Medical School in order to explore what I perceive as the calling that God has placed on my heart. I have wanted to practice medicine all my life, but the question I am asking myself as I prepare for my application is "What might that look like?" After many discussions with family, friends, and professors I decided to spend this time volunteering and learning Spanish. Through a connection with an advisor, I came across Foundation for Peace and was fortunate enough to be able to volunteer with them.
I am so thankful for this opportunity and even during my first week I feel as if God has been preparing me for this for a long time. I am working with Ana helping to organize many of the donations that are coming in and working on updating and developing water systems and new clinics. I will also be helping Isidro with small jobs around the house. We have a lot of work to do, but it is good work and I am really looking forward to it. I am maintaining a Blog for family and friends at home who have supported me on this trip and I will be updating it weekly on projects and different things we are doing (www.wordpress.lukedaniel.com).
God has blessed me immensely and I am so thankful that I have the opportunity to share some of those blessings with some of the people down here.
