There is a Haitian proverb that says "Bondye do ou. Fe pa ou, Mm a fe pa Mm," which means "God says do your part and I'll do mine."

Leah and Elphine

When I first began to recognize the call to come and serve as a missionary in the Dominican Republic for a more significant period of time, I experienced a ton of different emotions from excitement and joy to nervousness and anxiety. I came to recognize just as it states in the Haitian proverb and in Ephesians 2:10, "Trust in Him and He will prepare the way".

My first trip to the Dominican Republic with Foundation for Peace was in 2002 with a group from my home church, Woodside Presbyterian. We worked in a small town called San Miguel and assisted in building a church hand-in-hand with the community. That first 10-day trip caught my interest so much that I have continued to join my church and serve almost every summer since then.

In December 2009, I finished my schooling at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where I studied Secondary Science Education and on January 2nd I moved in to the Foundation for Peace house in Santo Domingo to begin my time volunteering.

My time here has definitely been quite interesting and unexpected. About two weeks after I arrived, an earthquake devastated Haiti and since then I have been working with Foundation for Peace staff and volunteers in field hospitals and camps for internally displaced people in Haiti. I have had the opportunity to help dig latrines, repair tents, build a school, form friendships, and even learn some Creole during this time.

My favorite aspects so far of working here are having the chance to sit, talk, and pray with the Haitians in the camps and get to know their stories as well share my faith with them. Another one of my favorite parts has been working with the teams from the states who come to volunteer here! I really look forward to getting to know each person who comes to volunteer with Foundation for Peace and being able to assist in a small way so they may touch lives in some manner.

It is an honor to be here working with the Foundation and all of their dedicated volunteers! I am really looking forward to all the groups we will have the summer and I can’t wait to continue to learn more about what it looks like to serve God and to continue trusting in His plan for me!

I encourage everyone to remember this proverb and God’s promise that if we trust in Him and follow His plan for us, He will prepare our path. We will find hope, joy, and peace when we trust in Him.
