Building Homes & Education in the DR | FFP Church Mission Trip
Woodside Church embarked on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic with a goal to make a tangible difference the lives of local communities. Partnering with local experts and community members, we focused our efforts on two significant projects that aimed not only to provide physical structures but also to foster growth and healing within the community.
Community Center Construction: Empowering Through Education
Our first project centered around completing a two-story community center in the Dominican Republic, where Foundation for Peace (FFP) will host vocational training classes. The building was nearing completion, thanks to the collaborative efforts of our team and local artisans. We focused on applying empañete—a smooth cement finish—to the raw block walls, painting the first story, and installing a much-needed tin roof on the second floor. The fresh coat of paint and finished walls for the bathrooms and partitioned sections are sure to provide a welcoming space for learning and community activities.
Building a Home, Building a Future
The second project held deep personal significance as we worked alongside Montero, his wife Alba Iris, and their six children to build them a new home. Previously cramped in a dilapidated space, the family now looks forward to a home with three bedrooms, a kitchen/living room, and a bathroom. The communal effort, with neighbors and Montero’s family participating in the construction, underscored the spirit of solidarity and hope that defines our mission.
Youth Engagement and Healing
Beyond construction, the team facilitated impactful sessions for local youth, combining English classes with grief counseling. These sessions provided a safe space for young people to express their emotions and commemorate lost loved ones through painting. The integration of emotional support alongside educational initiatives reflects our commitment to holistic community development.
Empowering Women Through Sewing
Another highlight of our trip was providing sewing classes at the vocational school, empowering local women with skills and materials to create beautiful bags and purses. The enthusiasm and creativity displayed by the participants were truly inspiring and highlighted the transformative power of education and opportunity.
A Week of Shared Experiences and Celebration
Each day brought new challenges and triumphs, from battling the relentless rain to celebrating milestones like Jamie's birthday and hosting a vibrant Vacation Bible School (VBS). The community's warmth and gratitude were palpable during our farewell worship service, where we shared stories, music, and reflections on the impact of our collective efforts. Little Ashley’s heartfelt gratitude and the testimonies of those touched by our work reaffirmed the lasting bonds forged during our time together.
Looking Forward with Hope
As they bid farewell to the Dominican Republic, their hearts were full of gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to meaningful change. The memories of laughter, hard work, and shared purpose will linger, reminding them of the resilience and strength of the communities they served. They leave knowing that our efforts have planted seeds of hope and empowerment that will continue to flourish long after their departure.
In closing, this journey has been a testament to the transformative power of community and collaboration. The community extends their heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported and participated in this mission. Together, we have built more than structures—we have built hope and a brighter future.
