Christian Mission Trip Prep Guide
Signing up for a Christian mission trip is a powerful way to serve others, spread the message of God's love, and make a positive impact in communities around the world. We partner with churches to host mission trips that bring together individuals and groups to work on various projects that empower communities. If you're preparing to serve with Foundation for Peace, there are ways to make an awesome mission trip even better. Much of this has to do with the Holy Spirit—the rest has to do with your attitude and expectations. Here are five things we suggest you do to prepare for a Christian Missions Trip:
1. Understand the Mission’s Purpose
Before heading out, take time to fully understand the purpose of your mission trip. Foundation for Peace focuses on building relationships, empowering communities, and creating lasting and sustainable change. A Christian mission trip often involves hands-on work such as construction, education, and humanitarian aid. Go with a humble heart. Don’t try to be the “perfect missionary” or “perfect evangelist.” Have a servant attitude, pray about everything and let the Holy Spirit do the saving. Focus on the family of God and your relationship with the people you serve. Lift them up by name in prayer.
2. Prepare Spiritually
A mission trip is as much about your relationship with God as it is about serving others. Spiritual preparation is key to getting the most out of your experience.
Here are a few ways to prepare spiritually:
- Pray: Start by praying for the community you'll be serving, the people you'll meet, and the team you’ll be traveling with. Prayer helps align your heart with God's will for the trip.
- Study Scripture: Reflect on Bible verses that encourage service, love, and compassion, such as Matthew 25:40 “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." and Mark 16:15 "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.".
- Meditate on Your Calling: Take time to ask God to reveal His purpose for you during this trip. Whether it’s showing love to strangers, using your specific skills, or learning from the experience, God’s guidance will help you make a lasting impact.
3. Fundraise for your Trip
Financial Preparation: Fundraising can be a part of the mission trip experience. Consider how you’ll fund the trip and how you can support the community you’ll be serving once you're there. Some platforms offer resources and tips for raising the necessary funds. Your family and friends can make donations to your trip cost right on our website!
4. Cultural Sensitivity and Respect
You will encounter people from different cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds during your mission trip. Approach this with respect and an open heart and you will be amazed and what you will learn, and what God has in store for you! Take time to learn about the culture and traditions of the community you’ll be serving, and remain open to learning from the people you encounter.
- Do Some Research: Before you travel, read up on the country, its history, its people, and any current issues. Understanding the cultural context will help you interact respectfully and avoid misunderstandings. You may also choose to practice some Spanish, Creole or Swahili! Sing simple VBS songs in their native language for fun with the children during work times. A smile and the use of English will also go far!
- Be Humble: Remember, you’re not just bringing help; you’re also going to learn from the community. Keep a humble attitude and be open to experiencing a new way of life.
- Be Mindful of Your Actions: Dress and behave as the women and men of the local church do. Remember, actions speak louder than words! Be expressively thankful for all they do for us. Hosting us is not an easy task!
5. Return and Reflect
The work doesn’t end when you leave the Dominican Republic or Kenya. Once you return home, take time to reflect on your experiences. What did you learn? How did your faith grow? What lasting changes or lessons will you carry forward into your daily life? Take time to share your experiences with others. God has changed you and shown Himself to you in many new ways, and that is something to celebrate! As you reflect, consider continuing to support the community you worked with financially, prayerfully, or through continued relationships.
Conclusion
Preparing for a mission trip with Foundation for Peace or any other Christian organization requires intentional spiritual and practical planning. By understanding the mission's purpose, preparing your heart and mind, embracing cultural differences, and working as a team, you can ensure a successful and life-changing experience. A well-prepared servant is flexible, focused on building relationships, ready to make a difference in the world and, most importantly, grows closer to God through service to others.
