When Rev. Stephen and Rosemary Mbogo began pastoring  the Living Word Church in 2005, they were deeply impacted by the children who roamed the streets with no access to education. Knowing firsthand that education is the key to self-sufficiency, they made a courageous decision to act. They used their own funds to build a small tin church, which soon became the birthplace of their first outreach: a school.

A Vision for Education

With the help of their first teacher, a church member Miss Polly, classes began inside the modest church. As demand grew, the Mbogo family rented a nearby building, allowing them to expand their offerings. Parents paid what they could, while teachers volunteered their time, fueled by a shared passion for empowering the next generation.

Their dedication caught the attention of a Dutch couple who, nearly a decade ago, felt a calling to support this vital work. They established the Giraffe Project, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to building and sustaining Tumaini School. Over the years, Tumaini has educated over 400 children annually, offering hope and opportunity to those from impoverished backgrounds.

Success Against All Odds

Despite facing immense challenges, Tumaini School has become a beacon of hope in Mathare North. The dedicated staff and resilient students have achieved remarkable academic success, consistently ranking in the top half of national exams. Some students have even placed among the top 100 nationwide, going on to secure spots in prestigious high schools and colleges.

However, today, the landscape has changed. The Giraffe Project's founders are aging, and the sponsorships that once flowed in have dwindled. Currently, over 100 children at Tumaini attend school without sponsors, leaving the institution struggling to meet its financial needs. To make matters worse, new government taxes imposed on employers have further strained the school's budget, as they must still pay teachers and staff.

A Call to Action

Despite these challenges, the church remains committed to its mission. They continue to accept children whose families cannot afford to pay, trusting that more funding will come. But they need your help. Tumaini School faces a monthly shortfall of $2,000, and any amount you can contribute will make a significant difference.

How You Can Help

  1. Become a Monthly Donor: A recurring monthly donation, no matter the size, helps provide stability and support for the school. Your contribution will directly cover essential costs like tuition, uniforms, books, and overall school operations.
  2. Sponsor a Child: For $400 a year, you can provide a child with the education they deserve. This sponsorship will cover their tuition and contribute to the school’s functionality.

Every Dollar Counts

Your generosity can transform lives. By choosing to support Tumaini School, you’re not just providing education; you’re offering hope and opportunity to children who desperately need it. Together, we can ensure that these bright young minds have the resources they need to succeed.
